Fairfax County has a population of over 1 million people and is the second highest earning income counties per family in the U.S. behind neighboring Loudoun County. It is known to have one of the best public education systems in the country. The main campus of George Mason University is here. It is also home to many government agencies including the Central Intelligence Agency as well as some of the top Fortune 500 companies. The most famous resident of Fairfax County was President George Washington who built a house in Mount Vernon by the Potomac River.
Fairfax County borders the Potomoc River, Arlington County, Alexandria city and the city of Falls Church to the east. Prince William County is to the Southwest and Loudoun County is to the Northwest. The city of Fairfax is within Fairfax county, but is an independent city despite being in the county.
