Alexandria is an independent city in Northern VA, south of Arlington and 9 miles from Washington D.C. on the west side of the Potomac. Alexandria is rich in U.S. history going back to 1669 when John Alexander bought the land on which the town began. Much of the areas popularity revolved around the Potomac River and the ability to use it for trade into points west. The city was founded in 1745 but not without disputes from landowners and citizens over the ever-popular area that is now Old Town.

Alexandria is considered to be a suburb to Washington D.C. because of it's proximity to the capital. Many of the residents work in government related jobs in and around the capital region. The area is popular with both tourists and locals due to its prime location in addition to the charm of the city and the plethora of things to do. Alexandria is a great place to stroll around for a relaxing day or evening out. There are so many choices from taking part in the many festivals and cultural events to visiting boutiques, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, the Torpedo Factory, salons and spas or just to enjoy the great vibe and pet friendly atmosphere that you will find in Alexandria. The waterfront is always busy and you can find many tours that locals and tourists enjoy from boat tours and dinner cruises to food tours. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has a list of a dozen distinctive destinations that are cities which provide an authentic visitor experience using best practices, Alexandria was on the list in 2011.
The community is active and the residents make use of the 950 acres of park and recreation space that is available. Alexandria is also a great biking city, it was even awarded the "Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community" by the League of American Bicyclists. Mount Vernon Trail is great and you can easily get a bike from one of the many bike rental shops or by using Capital Bike Share. Weather permitting many people bike to work. There is a free King Street Trolley as well as DASH, Alexandria's own bus service. There are also other very convenient transportation options nearby like the 4 metro stations - Van Dorn, Braddock Rd. Eisenhower Avenue and King Street. There are three airports nearby - Washington Dulles (IAD), Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) and Baltimore-Washington (BWI). Driving is easy with I-66, 495 and 395 all easily accessible.
Crime is very low in Alexandria and has been on a decline since 1970 with an all time low in 2010. The population in 2013 was 151,000 with a median household income of $80,847. The Alexandria public school system serves the area and some of the best Washington D.C. area private schools are in Alexandria such as St. Stephens and St. Agnes school and Episcopal High School. Northern Virginia Community College has a campus there as does George Washington University. Also, Virginia Tech has an Architecture Center. Overall, Alexandria is a great place to live or visit due to the many things to do and see, the stable housing market, low crime rate and high per capita income.
